Piracy: Somali path to power, prosperity
For young Somalis, piracy offers a life of adventure and money: At sea, they are armed with automatic weapons, rockets and grenades. On land, they are a cross between a town official and a gangster rapper — with grand houses, luxury cars and beautiful wives.

A while ago my family was watching the news and i heard the word pirates on TV which caught my attention because i had no idea pirates still existed. You think a parrot on the shoulder and a bottle of rum in the other hand, but I was surprised to learn that these are high tech modern pirates. At first it made me laugh but then when I understood how serious this might really be I started to think how bad this might turn out in the end. We already have enough on our plate now we are dealing with pirates? You cant turn your back for one second. This is just crazy it seems like people will do anything to get rich fast. I thought about this for a little bit and then I asked myself does this have to do with the economy at all? Maybe people are becoming more desperate because of our finical crisis? I think so.
For me as well the news caught my attention when I heard the word pirates. It has become such a made up character that people don't believe is real and find the idea of being a pirate cool. But now that we are actually dealing with real pirates and real ships being taken over the thought of a pirate now suddenly seems scary. Clearly people are doing whatever it takes to get money and like Heather said I think it has to do with our economy. I am very interested as to what it will take to stop the pirates?
When I heard the word pirates I was really confused. I had thought that pirates were the people in the olden days that raided the land and other ships for money. I thought that pirates didn’t exist anymore.
When I heard about the ship that was taken over by “Pirates” I was so shocked and was really curious. I was curious because we know where they are but we don’t do anything to prevent this from happening again. I also know that right now we aren’t really in the position to do anything because we are already fighting a war.
