The Recession Hits WA State Budget Hard

Lawmakers in Olympia appear to be close to agreeing on a budget for our State for the next two years. It cuts deeply into programs that will impact many of us - including the Highline School District.

I hope to add more to this posting later, but here is the latest from the Seattle Times:

I agree that these budget cuts need to be made even in the Highline school district. But I am not sure how raising the tuition cost by 14 percent per a year for the next two years will in the long run improve our economy. beacause then alot of kids who can get into college won't be able to pay for it which will result in our economy getting even worse without having our smarter people educated.

I also agree that budget cuts need to be made, but not to public schools and college tuitions. If I'm not mistaken President Obama said he would make it easier for families to get health care and put their children through college, not make it more difficult. I disagree with the fact that the Legislature decides whom to cut money from and where to spend more. Topics like these should be more in the people's hands. In the end we the people are the ones paying more money yet essentials such as education and health care are being cut. It's just not right.

I disgree with this whole budget cut in the field of education. At least to the high extent that it is being cut at. The economy of our state is in a horrible posistion right now and yes budget cuts are needed to help improve this. However, look at where the budget cuts are being taken from. Our state is cutting largely from Education, raising the cost of higher education and not taking so much from DSHS. As our govenor Christine Gregiore said "We must continue to build a solid foundation for generations to come, and that means investing in and protecting our children" she is contradicting her budgeting plan. How is cutting so largely from education investing in the children? I think its only taking away from them. And building a strong foundation? Raising high level education costs by 14% for the next two years is only discouraging families from sending their kids to college because they won't be able to afford it. Especially families with multiple siblings in college at the same time. As a state we knew that our budget was not in a good posistion and would get even worse 4 years ago. Yet our govenor continues to spend on Human resources and other things that don't help us out in the long run. We have spent money on helping illegal immigrants and helping out lower class citizens who can't afford to help themselves, but now that we are in such a tough time shouldn't that be where we cut back? As you can see I am very oppinionated on this subject because I have been raised in a home with a Mom as a principle who is now facing losing some of her strongest educators and assistants in her building and I don believe it is fair and right what are government is doing. This whole budgeting thing needs to be re-looked at and reconsidered.

I think the whole budget cut in the field of education is just ridiculous. “Lawmakers propose cutting nearly $800 million from public-school funding; the Legislature is proposing to help offset cuts to colleges and universities by allowing tuition increases of up to 14 percent a year for two years at four-year institutions and 7 percent a year for two years at two-year colleges. The net cut to higher education after the tuition increases would be around $325 million.” This plan is wrong; I mean a lot of people are going to be affected by this, especially the people who’s struggling to find jobs or doesn’t even have jobs. Also there is a chance that a lot of teachers might get fired and if there isn’t any teacher whose going to teach the students. I seriously think that our state government should really think hard about this plan of theirs because a lot of people are going to be mad and lose their jobs.

i also disagree on cutting the budget in public schools and college tuition too. That's because the president said he would lower or make it better for families to pay for college. But now the legislature wants to cut the budget in education which will make it harder for families to pay for their children's education. This will cause lack of education for kids because they are unable to afford education. Cutting back by 14% may not seem big to other people, but for me it seems like it's a big deal because now time goes by and the economy is still getting worse. The legislature/government needs to reconsider on what they are cutting back because the things they are cutting may help us but then again they need to reconsider also how it affects families.

I disagree with cutting the budgets on schools because it will affect people and the economy in many ways. I think that college is already expensive and I don't think it should be more than it is now. If colleges were more expensive our economy would be worse because the smarter people would not be educated. I do believe they should cut some things though because the economy is bad. 14% does seem like a lot though. The president said that he would make it easier for families to pay for college. I don’t think we should spend less money on things that aren’t as important because the price for education is more important for our future.

I dont think that cutting the budget for schools are good because it will affect many students. People that are planning to go to college wont have enough money to pay for it so college should not be more expensive than it is know. If they want to cut budgets on something they sould do it on something else and not for schools. The government should think of something else to cut because cutting the schools will affect families to and not just students. Education is more important so i believe that they shouldnt cut on the schools.

I agree with the budget cut that is happening, because it will be saving the state millions of dollars and not go into more debt that it is already in. Yes, some teachers may lose their jobs and of course class sizes may increase but it is all for a good reason. The Economy is going through a rough patch right now and this seems to be the best way to our state is trying to handle the budget we have for the next two years, but they are cutting out some programs that are very important for kids and parents like all day kindergarten this program is great for kids and parents to move forward. Good for the kids because they start school early and learn how to do the simple things to move on to higher education and its good for the parents to because it gives them time to go to work or other household chores. Also another budget terrible part in this cut is the increase of collage tuition now young adults will have to take out a bigger loan and put them self in more debt just to attend collage. This 14% increase to the tuition is outrageous for the young adult and the parents. Healthcare for the less fortunate is awful as well because health care is already expansive enough but now they are going to raise the prices even more will destroy families’ income and make it so poor families will not have healthcare. But you have to do what you have to do.

I realize (but do not agree with the fact) that budget cuts are going to be made everywhere so highline school district is no exception, but I think raising college tuition could end up hurting our economy ever more in the long run. If the price to become educated rises, more people won’t be able to afford it, which will result in an overall less educated country which can only have a negative outcome. These budget cuts will not only leave us with unemployed people that are certified to be teachers, but also an uneducated youth. Not a good plan.
