Open Thread - What else happened this week?

Since I never have time to post all of the important and interesting news of the week, I thought I'd offer you all an open thread to discuss online any news stories from the past week that you thought were interesting.

If you have seen or read something interesting that is connected in some way to our constitutional system of government post your comments. (If you want others to check out what you found, tell us where to find the story.)

There was an abortion doctor shot and killed in Kansas over the weekend

New Hampshire's Governor signed a gay-marriage bill into law.

People in the Middle East are reacting to Obama's speech.

If you are looking for news, I've got some "Shared Items" to the right.

That's too bad about that abortion doctor. Women should have the right to choose if they want to have a baby or not. Having a kid too early can ruin lives and it's not like the babies can feel anything. It's a shame people are resorting to violence over the issue.

I think it’s wrong to kill someone over their profession. Like it says in the constitution everyone has the right to life and this doctor did also. i understand that people get made over issues like these but it’s wrong and to have an opinion is ok but to kill someone over it is very unconstitutional.

I think it is great that New Hampshire legalized gay marriage it seems as though a lot of states lately have been legalizing it. I believe that gay people should have the same rights as straight. I also like that the Governor didn’t necessarily believe in gay marriage but still signed anyway.

I think that it is awful that the abortion docter got shot over his profesion, he is just a symbol for peoples anger on the subject. He was just doing his jod, he didnt mean to offend anyone and he ended up dying for it. He probably helped a lot of people out, a child that is unwanted will change a persons life in a negative way. I hope whoever shot him gets the death penalty.

I think that this was not right or constitutional. I think that it is really bad that someone killed someone due to there profession. It is against the constitution to because everyone has the right to live. I think the doctor was a good person because he helped people with there abortions.

This was not on the website but it happened this week. The two American based journalist that were found illegally sneaking into north Korea and were jailed until the trial which is this week. The two journalist face up 50+ years in a labor camp due to the arrest. I think that this is wrong but we can not do much dude to the fact that its in north Korea. And the fact that they wont have a fair trial is also horrible. And im fairly sure there is no such thing as a fair trial in North Korea!-Jacob Goss

Current Event #9: It makes me so angry to hear about this man being shot in a church foyer just for his profession. I personally don't exactly agree with abortion, but I don't judge people for getting them. Its scary for a 14 year old girl to become pregnant, and she's paying the consequences of her actions if she has the baby or has an abortion becuase they both come at a cost. Just because someone disagrees on the subject of abortion doesn't mean they should go shooting someone who performs them. This man was just doing his job and its so unfair that he had to die in such an awful way for doing it.

Thats really sad about the doctor. Its really sad that people can't keep their hate to themselves or handle it in a mature level. Its really unfortunate.

Its really great to that New Hampshire's Governor signed a gay-marriage bill into law! I really hope that this becomes a trend and states see that its not fair for them not to make it legal for two people who love each other to be committed forever!

I think that abortion is wrong but I also think it is wrong for someone to kill another person just because thye don't agree with their profresion. It was very unconstitutional for this man to kill the abortion doctor. He had the right to proform abortions because they are legal. Altough I do not agree with abrotion I do agree that as americans in america everyone has thta right to choose. So for this man to say that it is wrong for a women to kill her baby it was just as wrong for him to kill the doctor.

This is crazy! I completely agree with Heather. This doctor has the right to life like everyone else. But then doesn't also the fetus have right to life? It is hard for people to draw a line i believe. I don't personally believe abortion is the best way to get rid of an unwanted child. I wish more young girls resorted to adoption over abortion. But personally i would find it almost equally hard to have a child at my age as it would be to having an abortion. I feel like you would lose some of yourself.

Killing someone over what they do for a living is not right. According to the 1st amendment everyone has the right to life as well did this doctor. Its his job and not everyone believes in no abortions. The parents should have the right to choose if they want to have a baby or not it is a life changing decision and some people aren’t ready for that. I can see why people get mad about the subject but on the same hand if you have a baby and you’re not ready for it you will also have negative feelings about it. Once you have the baby I bet your feelings grow for it so it is hard to give it up for adoption but that still doesn’t mean that your ready to keep it. So that being said it is best just not to have a baby if you’re not ready for one

Gay marriage, hhhmmm. as much as i dont like gay marriage i think it is not something anyone should have any say on. If you want to be in a same sex relationship i think it is your decision and no one else’s but at the same time i don’t think it should be called marriage. Does this tie into the fact of going against the basic human’s right of freedom of belief?

I think that it was awful that a abortion doctor was shot and killed just because other people were upset that he was going against their personal beliefs. I believe that women should have a choice in getting and abortion or not. I think that people should respect thier own personnal belifs and not get so mad that the other people are doing what they think is wrong. Killing someone is not a good way to get your point across. violence is not the answer

I think that it is really bad that the abortion docter was killed because of his job. It isnt his place to decide whether or not his job is morally correct he just wanted to make a living. This can't be described as unconstitutional, it is purely criminal.

The case with the doctor upsets me because a man doing his job is killed because of someones opinion? Its just wrong. It pisses me off that people in america take out their opinionated anger on innocent people who dont deserve it. This man was a doctor, who obviously has worked hard through his lifetime and to have his life end for a clinical practice is totally disturbing. If anyone were to be mad i say take it out on the mother because it is her decision.

Abortion is not okay, but sometimes its necessary. I'm with a lot of people where i am really torn on the issue. Half of me says we all make mistakes and that having an unplanned baby (especially as a teen or young adult)could ruin a life. But the other half of me says that you are killing a chance at life, when the baby could be adopted by someone who would really want and love it. But the Dr. who was murdered shouldn't have been because he was just doing something that he thought was right. As long as it's reasonable, everyone should be entitled to their poinion.

I really don't care for gay marraige. Therefore I am not going to be quick to defend the issue nor am I going to argue against it. But, I do think people deserve the right to love who they want to.

I think it’s terrible that the abortionist was shot and killed just because of his profession. This clearly violates the man’s right to life and is just a completely undeserved murder. He was just one of thousands of doctors who give abortions so it’s not like killing him ended abortion; no goal was reached by killing him other than simply ending his life. What the shooter did was wrong and in my personal opinion I think they deserve the death penalty.
