Education The resegregation of Seattle's schools Seattle Times Newspaper

A big U.S. Supreme Court decision announced this term struck down a desegregation plan the Seattle Public School District had been using. This report in the Seattle Times discusses how Seattle's schools are much less racially balanced than they were decades ago. (It seems to me the Supreme Court ruling is a minor factor right now - it will probably have more impact next school year.) There is some interesting stuff in this article - including how many parents which there was more racial balance in their kids schools.

you know, i don't really get what the big deal is. i mean, in all honesty, i think it should be one's decision to be schooled where they wish; if they choose to be in a school with people the same color skin, then that's their choice. don't get me wrong, i'm all for interracial learning and whatnot, it's all good in my book. but i saw somewhere in that article that interracial learning helps widen our ideas of culture or something? that sounds like a load of crap to me. at least from my understanding (and as you know, mount rainier has quite a diverse population), there isn't that whole big of a difference between the cultures whatsoever.

so ultimately, going back to the article where they were talking about deciding whether they should put kids in schools according to neighborhood or according to...variety?, i think that should be determined by the majority vote of those involved in the matter. it's the most logical way in my opinion.

i'm so tired, night
