The Death Penalty in WA State

Washington State is scheduled to execute an offender for the first time in years. What are your thoughts about use of the death penalty in our state and in our nation.

The story:
Clock ticks down to Brown's execution after appeal fails

Some commentary:
Should Washington state kill the death penalty?

Washington state must abandon the death penalty

My opinion on the issue of the death penalty is this. The only reason for a person to be executed is if that person had killed someone else. And in this case Cal Brown has indeed killed someone. So I feel there is no need for discussion. So I do believe that there is need for the death penalty in our state and Nation. Otherwise no one will learn. While some may argue that this is cruel punishment, I do not believe so as I stated before.

I agree because I don't believe that it's cruel punishment because what he did to the girl he raped and murdered, was cruel punishment because she had done nothing wrong to deserve such a thing. I also think that we should keep the death penalty in our state.

He definitely deserves the death penalty. He not only killed her, but tortured and raped her and then again to another woman. The only time the death penalty should be used is when it is a murderer, and he is a murderer and rapist so yes he should get it. Some say it is cruel, but what he did is even more cruel.

i agree with the death penalty because i feel that if you take a life then its only fare to be treated the same way. also sense the system is so hard to get through most likely you either did something very wrong if you get to it before you die or you just had a long life but i feel that if it is not there as a reminder for people then people may take advantage because they can get away with more.BAM

I think the death penalty is a horrible way of cinvicting criminals....but in the way it's what's best for showing people that what they did bad was wrong and that other people should not do it also. Like hannah said....the death penalty should only be used if and only if the case id bad and that what they did cannot be forgived....like murdering people, rape, etc....so basicly..brown should've been convicted with the death penalty.

i believe that the death penalty is a pretty harsh punishment. i think that the crime committed would have to be a very severe crime for anyone to get this type of punishment. the death penalty is necessary in some cases, i think that any terrorists or anyone in the u.s who is going against the u.s government could potentially deserve the death penalty. the alien acts sort of go with this, except with them they would capture or deport the suspect.now i think that any terrorist or anyone who is a threat to the u.s or who has committed such a high level crime could be a possible person for the death penalty. Basically the death penalty should ONLY be used in extreme crimes and on extremely dangerous people.

-James McLean-I believe the death penalty is needed otherwise many people will commit horrible crimes without getting punished. Also killers like Cal brown will not be scared to kill others if the death penalty was not in affect because they will just go to jail instead. also people who break the law in extreme ways that hurts others should not be allowed to live in society with others who work and contribute to society.-James McLean

I agree with the death penalty because it is a big punishment. Also I think there will be fewer crimes because criminals would fear the death penalty. I think the death penalty should only happen in big crimes though. I don’t think it is fair that people break laws in extreme ways and can just live in society. If a person did get the death penalty though they must have did something really wrong so the punishment seemed right. There would also be fewer deaths because people would be scared to kill others because of the death penalty.

I agree with the death penalty to an extant. If someone does a horrible offense like homicide and etc then I believe that they deserve to have their own lives taken away. But there have been instances when an innocent man has been convicted to a crime that they had not commited and sentenced to their deaths. Then some time after the execution evidence would surface proving the man innocent. So I do agree with the death penalty but much deliberation and work has to be put to make sure that a person is deserving what they are getting.

The death penalty, at its core, is an un-constitutional violation of the 8th amendment. As citizens, it is illegal to take the life of another. Are we willing to say that because we are assembling as a group of citizens, even a state, it is alright to take a life? In Washington State, murderers, even those who commit other "big" crimes along with their murders such as rape, arson or robbery, can be given life in prisonment without any possiblity of parole. This prevents them from having any chance of reoffending. Some might say that the possibility of the death penalty makes them more likely to think twice before commiting their crimes, but people like Cal Brown are sinful, pathological muderers and psychopaths. No amount of possible consequence or incentive will stop them from commiting these unspeakable acts.
Also, putting Mr.Brown to death will not "bring back" Holly Washa. All it wil do is end one more life. I would argue that a lifetime imprisonment would be a tougher punishment to handle than lethal injection. Are we really willing to put this man out of his misery. It's not like WA state prisons are some paradise resort.
Furthermore, in some cases, death by lethal injection has been botched and has caused the person to go through excruciating pain. There is now humane way of ending a human life. The wish to put a murderer to death is a baseist, gut reaction, fueled by anger and revenge. This will do nothing to bring back the victim(s), this will accomplish no new form of justice, this will not stop criminals from acting the way they do. States' use of the death penalty will only bring us farther from our legal systems overall goal of justice for all.

Should the death penalty be killed in washington? i think the death penalty is not the best way to handle someone being convicted of murder. what about the people that get convicted under false evidence? however, at times i think it is reasonable under some circumstance. the death penalty is a violation to the 8th amendment. it is illegal for someone to take anothers life. on the other hand, if you think you have the right to take someones life someone should have the right to take yours. why should the people of the united states have to pay taxes for someome to be held in jail for taking someones life? me personally, i dont want to pay money out of my pocket to hold someone in jail for taking someones life. there are thousands of people in jail for muder, why not use those cells for people that have a chance to turn there life around instead of having to build new jails to keep all criminals in which again cost more money. all in all i think the death penalty is not the best way to handle murders but reasonable under certain circumstances.

I believe there should be death penalty not only here in Washington but in other states to. Having death penalty is a punishment for some criminals that has done something bad like Cal Brown who killed, tortured and raped someone. The death penalty should be done to criminals who has done it more than one time. By having the death penalty it would make criminals understand that if they kill someone they are risking their lifes to.

I don’t really care whether the state of Washington wants death penalty or not. If killing someone for what they have done can solved the problems that they have cause then I guess they should be killed as a punishment. And death penalty could cause fear to other criminals and they have something to think about when they would try to do something that they might regret. But taking another one’s life is a violation to the 8th amendment. It prohibits the federal government from imposing excessive bail, excessive fines or cruel and unusual punishments. After all no one should have the right to kill someone because everyone has equal rights. But certain people have been given a certain power that can violate a certain law or people’s rights. The government and certain people who work for the government are a good example of who can violate other people’s rights.
So as I said earlier I don’t care if the state of Washington wants death penalty or not, as long as it knows the consequences I’m good with it.

I have a somewhat neutral opinion on the death penalty. I don't think that everyone who kills another person should face the death penalty; however I do feel that in certain cases where lines have been crossed, it is necessary. Also, if the death penalty is to be put into action upon a citizen, I think that there should have to be very thorough research done by multiple people/organizations proving that the crime in fact was committed. Basically the death penalty should be used in very serious cases where a punishment such as death is called for, but should not be used in cases which lack evidence or seriousness.

I think that if a person takes life from another individual then they as an individual should be taken away from life or life should be taken from them. I think that killing is wrong and you reef what you sew. You kill, then you get killed. I believe that the death penalty is unconstitutional and it goes against the 8th amendment but I also think that the death penalty is okay. I mean why kill. For what purpose. Its stupid and you almost always get caught. Overall many situations call for the death penalty and its okay.

I believe that the death penalty is an unconstitutional reaction Americans have resorted too just for the fact that the state is tired of dealing with the outrageous acts of villains. We do not have the authority to take the life of another human being, even if that person has committed a murder. We would have to consider ourselves murderers even if we think they "deserved" it. It is not our place to judge the lives of others. If we open the death penalty door it would bring in worse ideas of punishment for our state. This gives those who we think deserve the death penalty an easy way out of their actions. They need to pay restitution for what they have done.

I think that the death penalty is a very harsh crime and should not be allowed. I think this because it goes against the constitution. It violates the eighth amendment because you can't take a life of another person which is happening when you’re using the death penalty. No matter what someone has done I do not think they deserve the death penalty. There are several other different punishments then the death penalty and some are even worst but you’re still not taking a life.
