Why Are So Many Americans in Jail?

From today's New York Times came this news:
"The United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population. But it has almost a quarter of the world’s prisoners."
Now, I knew that the incarceration rate in this country is bad, especially for the poor and racial and ethnic minorities, but these statistics did take me by surprise.

I think that the only reason why there are so many americans in jail because we have so many rules and people don't abide to them and its some of the rules and laws are sometimes rediculous but it is still the law. In this article I think it was interesting the different ratings between countries. China has a bigger population than the US yet the US still has more people in jail. Maybe some rules or changes should be done. Or maybe other countries should do the same things as the US.

this article was a real eye opener. i knew our country had problems with felons and too many people in prison but i never knew it was as bad as the numbers show. i think our country has many of these problems because many people want too many things that they are not willing to work for. they try to find the easy way out and end up doing the wrong things to get their desires. i think the main way to start shaping up our country is through education. starting with government and with the help of other advertising sources people can learn to be successful and happy without breaking the law. the final thing i think contributes to this high rate is illegal drugs in our country. so many people have illegal drugs available to them its unbelievable. kids use these drugs every day and eventually are addicted and even start dealing them their selves. this just leads to more bad decisions and a higher chance of going to prison. even though our political systems calls for putting so many people in prison i believe it is the right thing to do cause you can not just leave these criminals to do whatever they please. -tucker rockwell

i think its amazing how many people in our country are being detained in our countrys jails.. i knew that there where alot but i didnt know the exactly the number and i thought that it was very eye opening and also kinda scary knowing that peoplle want everyhing they can get for less and they are willing too take the risk of getting caught and put in jail for long periods of time just to get something for free.. its really interesting that china has a larger population but the american country still has more people detained in jails.. i think with the government and local laaws starting to be enforced more the crime rate will go down and this will decrease the number of people in jails.. also with the increase of the DEAs enforcement i think it will help get illegal drugs off the street which will not onlly have an effect on older people going too jail but have a greater effect on young children who will just develop into criminals themselves and contribute more to the high jail rate.. kyle ehlers p.5

I never thought thast we had the production of 25 percent of people in jail, but its not that surprising to me. I honestly beleif that the two strongest countries are china and the US for a reason.I know that some of our laws are just ridiculous, but for the most part, a lot of the ones that we have and the reasdons people are in jail are for good reasons. The only thing I do not like about these is that there is no solution to be found. It really sucks because some of thesee people even if they get out for a murder, then if they do the smallest thing wrong within a perios of time have to go bad. I just dont like the form of government that we fololow. Thats probably another contribution to why we have such high jail rates. I mean amlost 1 percent of people in the US are in jail.. That is absurd. Another thing of why this is, is because of how easy it is to do illegal things, even if your only a teenager, you should know right from wrong, and based off of their decisions these statistics continue to rise, and whose fault is it????? Thats what everyone wonders.... Sometimes the parents, teachers, environment, and peersssss

Yo yo coragg.
After reading this article, unlike everyone else, this wasn't very eye opening or surprising to me. By no means am i saying that i think its alright that we have 2.3 million american citizens behind bars, but it does not shock me in the least. Our country has so many laws that it's hard for anyone to honestly say they've lived a life of never breaking one of the million laws we have today. I think its stupid that we count in these statistics of detainees, people who have commited crimes like tax fraud, or smoking pot, or swearing at a cop. I think the people who really count in these numbers that we compare to other countries should be the ones who have done much more dangerous things, like murder, etc. The article said 1 out of every 100 americans have been in, or ar in jail. I bet that half of those people in there are really humble and great, and just slipped up, while the other half deserve to be in there for commiting a serious crime. It's a dumb system, and i think we should get on track with every other country in the world and only punish the realy serious criminals. Good night!
